Life Skills
There is a big difference between being supported to do something and being able to do it yourself. At People’s First Choice Australia, our NDIS life skills programs are designed to close that gap. We work alongside participants to build the specific abilities that give them greater freedom in everyday life, whether that is navigating a supermarket, managing a fortnightly budget, or catching a tram independently for the first time.
Areas We Focus On in Life Skills Development
- Financial management, basic budgeting, and confident independent purchasing
- Cooking techniques, meal planning, and healthy food preparation habits
- Public transport confidence and community navigation skills
- Personal care independence and hygiene self-management routines
- Verbal and non-verbal communication confidence in social and community settings
- Self-advocacy, decision-making, and understanding personal rights
- Daily scheduling, time management, and following through on personal commitments
How We Teach Life Skills
We do not sit at a table and run through worksheets. Real skill development happens in real environments. Our workers teach budgeting at the supermarket, cooking in the kitchen, and transport skills on actual buses and trains. Learning by doing, in the places where those skills will actually be used, is how lasting capability gets built.
Progress is tracked and celebrated at every stage. Small wins matter, and we make sure participants know when they have achieved something meaningful, because confidence and capability grow together.
